My Biggest A-HA Moment!

I want to take a moment today to reflect on my biggest A-Ha moment yet in my early business experiences. I was like many photographers out there; I labeled myself as a portrait and family photographer, pressed GO, and heard crickets. No one was coming through the door. No one knew I was there. No one was interested. Why?
Because, this market like many are flooded with people just like I was, who are slapping the easy label on and hoping for people to run in the door. People don't, and won't, if you take the easy way out. Why should they? There is no reason for a person who is happy with their family photographer to switch, and no reason for someone looking for a photographer to choose me.
Don't ever take this personally! It's the name of the game in branding. I realized I wasn't taking the advice I give all day long to clients in my marketing day job: what makes you UNIQUE? Only when you sit down and realize or find your value and identity are you prepared to make people choose you. What value do you give that no one else can? Is it a turnaround time? A style? A product? A service?
For me, I realized that when I thought about it, my skills and background in marketing and branding made personal brand photography an obvious choice for me. Beyond the photography, I am uniquely equipped to give people the branding expertise to create the most effective visual images to emotionally connect with their intended audience. No more coffee shop photos!
Take 5 minutes today and think about your unique value and brand that. Own it.
